10 Tips To Survive A Long-Haul Flight!

With air travel becoming popular each day, airlines are looking at new routes to connect us to the world.

It is finally possible to fly to far off destinations about which you have dreamed about.

But before you reach your destination you’ll be sitting in a stuffy aircraft cabin for more than 8 hours ,which might sound like a nightmare to most.

However, a little preparation can make long-haul International flights a breeze!

To help you start your holiday refreshed and relaxed as soon as you airplane lands, here are 10 travel tips to survive a long haul flight.

1. Choose Your Seat Wisely

One of the most essential long-haul flight tips is to think ahead and choose a good seat on a flight which is scheduled to depart at a comfortable time.

Make sure that you check-in online and pre-book your seat. Whether you’re an aisle person( for ease of moving around) or a window person (for views and something to lean on), it’s essential to ensure you don’t spend your time for elbow room in the dreaded middle seat.

Also, try to book a seat in the emergency exit row if possible, so that you have extra legroom.

2.Book The Right Flight

The cheapest flight isn’t always the best!

Yes, if it’s a short journey you can survive the small seats and the lack of service. But when it comes to long-haul flights you have to think about what that flight is actually going to be like.

Many budget carriers have long layovers at terrible airports, so keep that in mind. It’s better to pay a few thousand rupees more to travel in comfort.

Also, try to book a flight that arrives at your destination in the morning. This way you can sleep through most of your journey and begin your holiday when the sun is up and the city is active.

In case, you have budget restrictions, read more about “Top 10 Budget Carriers That Fly Out Of India”.

3.Wear Comfortable Clothes For Your Trip

Dress for Comfort, not looks!

Wear an outfit that you will be comfortable in, even after 10 hours of flying.

Remember, sitting still and being blasted by an air-conditioning system can get chilly. Wear several loose layers to help you adjust to the temperatures inside the cabin.

Also, wear closed toed shoes rather than flip-flops. Make sure you don’t wear any footwear that’s too tight because your feet tend to swell up at high altitudes.

4. Prepare Yourself For Sleep

You’ll be on the airplane for quite some time, so it’s worth bringing a few long-haul flight essentials.

Start with a lightweight blanket and invest in a good travel pillow to make sleeping on an airplane more comfortable.

An eye mask and a good pair of noise-cancelling headphones can make you forget about the other 300 odd passengers sitting inside.

5.Don’t Stuff Your Carry-On Bag

Don’t pack too much in your cabin luggage. While a few little extras definitely help, keep things travel-sized and to a minimum.

There’s nothing more stressful than carrying around a big suitcase and trying to fit it in the overhead bin.

Try to carry a small suitcase that you can keep in the overhead bin and a handbag or back pack (depending on your airline’s hand baggage policy) to keep smaller essentials such as your headphones and tablet/laptop within your reach.

6.Pack Your Own Snacks

Of course, you’ll get meals on long-haul flights, but the timing of those meals might be an issue.

International flights travel through different time zones, which means you will end up with breakfast at dinner time and a heavy meal, first thing in the morning.

To avoid feeling hungry while you wait for the food trolley to come, pack some fruits, salads, nuts, protein bars or other healthy homemade snacks.

7. Stay Hydrated

Did you know? Our body sheds up to 1.5 liters of water during a three-hour flight!

The air inside the airplane is almost 15 % drier than the air that we breathe on the ground and the chances of becoming dehydrated are high.

Remember to regularly drink water during a flight. It will keep the oxygen levels in your body up and will help boost your energy. You will feel energetic and lively.

8. Move Around The Airplane

Not moving enough on the airplane is the biggest reason why you feel inactive after a flight.

Why not use the aisle instead?

Stretching and small muscle-friendly exercises will help you keep your energy up and your body active. Speaking of which, mind your posture as well! A simple shoulders-back-and-spine-straight stance will go a long way.

9. Make A Few Friends

Flights are a great opportunity to meet interesting people going your way.

One of the most fun ways to survive a long-haul flight is to strike up a conversation with your seat-mate.

Making small talk can be an exhausting task, but chatting with a fellow traveller keeps you alert when you’re flying. It keeps your mind active, engages you, and who knows, you may end up with a  new travelling companion by the time you step off the airplane.

10.Relax & Enjoy Your Ride

There is no better time to just forget about your worries and do nothing than when you’re flying. No mobile phone coverage, a dedicated crew to pamper you and someone else in the driving seat.

Use the time to catch up on that book you haven’t had the chance to read, the list of movies you didn’t get the time to watch or get excited about your destination by going through the guidebook.

See those eight, ten or twelve hours as bonus time and your long flight will immediately become a positive thing rather than a drag.

So, the next time you fly and are looking for travel accessories, headphones, sleeping gear or just a nice book to read, download the AirWhizz App. Avail exclusive discounts on Swiss Military accessories as an app user and get information about airport shops and their location on the move.

10 Things That Are Restricted On Airplanes In India!

Planning to go on a vacation to your dream destination?

Well, You definitely don’t want to start off your trip by being pulled out by the security personnel at the airport because of that ‘Restricted Item’ you forgot to remove from your bag.

Often with the excitement of beginning a new travel journey, we forget to check the things that might cause hindrance in our travel plans.

But don’t worry, we’ve got your back!

To help you pack efficiently for your next trip, here’s a list of items that most international or domestic airlines in India don’t allow you to carry or have certain restrictions on them.

1.Tools

Mechanical tools such as saws, hammers, drills, wrenches, pliers etc are not allowed in hand baggage.

This is because they can be used to physically harm/threaten people or destroy airline/airport property. Make sure that your bag doesn’t even have a tiny screwdriver before you leave.

However, you can pack them in your checked-in luggage and has to be wrapped properly.

2.Scissors

The extent of why scissors are despised by airlines can be proven by the fact that it comes on two types of lists of prohibited items – once under sharp objects and again under personal items.

Scissors of any kind aren’t allowed in flights, whether it’s a grooming scissor or a normal one.

3.Lighters

Lighters are banned from flights for obvious reasons!

They can cause fire because of their combustible nature, so you must not carry them with yourself.

Another important thing to note here is that even matchsticks aren’t allowed on flights.

4.Toy Weapons

Kids love toys and we often pack it to keep them busy on flights, but if those toys are replicas of weapons, airport authorities will ask you to get rid of it.

Make sure you don’t pack such toys in your or your kid’s bag. They aren’t allowed in check-in luggage as well as hand-baggage.

5.Knives

Knives, just as mechanical tools, can be used as an arm to hurt people.

Whether it’s a small knife or a big one, you can’t carry one in your check-in or hand luggage.

However, there’s an exception that allows you to carry a butter knife which has round edges and not sharp ones. But you will definitely be asked to open your bag even if you have a butter knife, so avoid carrying one.

6.Weapons

Of course, guns are a big ‘No-No’, but here we are referring to Martial arts and Self-defence items.

Things such as Brass Knuckles, Nunchuks, Mace/Pepper Spray, Stun Guns/Shocking Devices or Throwing Stars aren’t allowed on the flight.

You can pack them in your check-in bag, however, you can be asked to step aside at the security queue while your bag is checked physically.

7.Power Banks

Power banks aren’t allowed in the check-in luggage because they contain lithium cells and they have a tendency to combust.

However, you can carry around a power bank in your hand or even put it in your hand-baggage.

8.Radioactive Material

Corrosive items like acids, alkalis, mercury, batteries, oven or drain cleaners are not allowed on airplanes.

The carriage of pencil battery cells is now allowed only if its attached to the device you’re carrying. But loose cells can only be carried in carry-on bags and not in checked-in luggage.

9.Magnets

We all see magnets every day and they seem harmless, but for an airplane, they can be catastrophic.

An aircraft has a standby compass in the cockpit which is a normal magnetic compass. This compass must be fitted and must be working in case of extreme instrument failure.

Magnetic goods in the cargo can interfere with this compass and for precautionary reasons, they don’t allow them in your bag.

It can also interfere with the sensors fitted on aircraft and can cause electrical noise.

A few examples are briefcases attached with alarm sensors or toys with magnets inside them.

10.Spray Paints

The paint inside the can is combustible and spray paints cannot be carried in either hand baggage or check-in luggage.

In fact, any kind of paint cannot be carried because they come under the ‘Flammable Liquids’ category.

Children Flying Alone? Everything You Need To Know!

Today, more than ever, children are flying without their parents. It’s safe, largely hassle-free and quite exciting for them.

But the world of airport terminals and baggage claims can get a bit overwhelming, especially for a kid whose flying alone.

Children who fly alone are referred to as Unaccompanied Minors (UM’s), and every airline has different requirements and regulations for children traveling without an adult.

But before we get into these rules, let us give you some handy tips that will help your child prepare for their first memorable solo airplane ride.

1. Prepare Your Kid For Flying

Before your child goes on their first airplane ride alone,  fly with them and let them sit away from you to see how they manage.

Tell them how to find seat numbers, discuss who they can talk to if there are any issues while flying, and what to do when an airplane lands.

Also, make it a point to discuss in-flight etiquettes with your kids.

In case you don’t get the chance to travel with them before their solo journey, you can always take them to the airport a few days in advance, show them around & if possible, make them meet the airline staff.

2. Pack Efficiently

Pack your child’s luggage as smartly as possible, keeping it light but including everything that is necessary.

Make sure your child will have plenty to do on the flight. Pack their carry-on bag with a few snacks, medicine kit, their favourite toys, electronic devices like tablets, puzzles, colouring books, headphones and emergency cash.

Also, teach them how to use the cell phone, at least enough for them to be able to call the person picking them up when they land or in case of emergency.

3. Book A Direct Flight

While choosing the airline, opt for a direct flight so that your child doesn’t have to deal with the hassle of connections.

If possible, try and choose one of the first few flights in the day, as later ones have a greater chance of being delayed.

4. Prepare An Information Card

Prepare a card with all the relevant information about your child. This should include their name, age, address, flight number and destination.

Include the name, contact details and if possible, the photograph of the person who will be picking your child up at the other end, as well as any emergency contact details. Do not forget to mention any medical conditions or allergies that your child might have.

5. Arrive Early To The Airport

On the day of travel, make sure you reach 2 hours before the flight’s scheduled departure time so that you can make the necessary arrangements to accompany them to the gate.

You will have to get a Guest Pass and fill out an ‘Unaccompanied Minors’ form. Also, introduce them to the airline crew and the gate staff.

Make sure that your child can identify the uniform colour and the people they can reach out to.

Communicate with the person who is picking your child up, letting them know when the flight takes off, and if there is any delay.

Most airlines require parents to stay at the airport until the flight takes off so that if there’s a problem, the child can be returned.

Now that you know how to prepare your child and yourself for their first solo flight, let us tell you which airlines, that fly in India, allow UM’s and the rules regarding it.

Indian Airlines

In India, rules for unaccompanied minors are almost similar across all airlines except the age limit.

Airlines that allow unaccompanied minor travel require parents or guardians to fill up an indemnity form with details of the minor, person seeing off at departure and person meeting on arrival.

Also, some airlines such as Jet Airways do not permit online booking for unaccompanied minors; the ticket has to be booked at reservation or ticketing offices.

2.Air France (Age limit – 5 to 14)

3.Singapore Airlines (Age Limit – 5 to 12)

The airline takes its unaccompanied minor travel so seriously, that they change all aspects related to children’s travel every quarter.

Everything You Need To Know About Flying In The Monsoon Season!

The monsoon season is upon us with lashing rains, thunderstorms and striking lightening!

Statistics reveal to us that flying is safer than driving. But no one really cares about those numbers when you’re sitting on a bumpy flight surrounded by dark and thunderous clouds.

To help keep your panic attack at bay, we are going to tell you about why you shouldn’t fear flying in the monsoon season and some travel tips to go with it.

Why You Shouldn’t Fear Flying In The Monsoon

1. Airplanes Can Withstand Lightning

According to aviation experts, an aircraft is hit by lighting at least once a year.

But don’t worry! it will not burn and char your airplane. Airplanes are built to absorb over eight times the energy carried by a bolt of lightning.

Also, the tiny pin like devices you must have seen on the wings of your airplane, absorbs the electric energy and does not let it affect the passengers or the aircraft electronics.

2.Aircrafts Are Designed To Handle Bad Weather

Aircrafts manufacturers build airplanes in such a way that they don’t tear apart in rough weather. The wings and the main body of an aircraft can withstand extreme wind pressure when flying.

Also, they install advanced avionics to help pilots land in lower visibility which is often the case during heavy rains.

You’d be surprised to know that aircrafts are a lot more maneuverable than they seem. But pilots keep it straight and cruise it for the comfort of the passenger.

3. It’s Completely Safe To Take Off During Monsoons

It may seem that your flight might be at risk, looking at the amount of rain and wind while on your way to the airport, but that’s not true.

Thousands of flights around the world operate in rains and snow without any hassle.

Also, airlines have very strict rules about operating in such conditions. The Air Traffic Controllers (ATC) will not allow the airplane to take of if the conditions are dangerous.

Your flight might get delayed but if your flight is on the taxiway and ready to take off you don’t need to worry and are good to go.

4. Pilots & Flight Attendants Can Handle Such Situations

You might imagine your captain frantically trying to take control of the airplane stick while flying through a bumpy weather.

In reality its quite the opposite!

Your pilot is probably worrying about keeping the coffee in the cup and  cursing the airplane through the stormy clouds. This is because turbulence is common, and in several cases, it is handled by the aircraft’s autopilot.

Also, your flight attendants have been trained to handle all worst case scenarios.

5. Your Aircraft’s Tyre won’t Skid During Landing

Landing is the most challenging part of any flight, but your aircraft’s tyres have got you covered.

The tyres of an airplane are designed to withstand a weight of more than 35 tons. These tyres are so strong that airplanes can land at 170 Miles per hour for more than 500 times.

Additionally, airplane tyres are inflated to 200 pounds per square inch, which is about six times the pressure used in a car tyre.

Along with this, your pilot continuously adjusts the airplanes landing distance and speed so that the airplane doesn’t skid-off.

6. Statistics Speak For Themselves

Flying is indeed safer than any other mode of transport.

According to a research conducted by Statistic Brain Research Institute in 2017, the odds of actually being involved in a plane crash is 1 in 29.5 million.

The number of aircraft crashes has been steadily declining over the last 20 years, up to the point that 2017 was declared one of the safest years in aviation history.

While plane crashes are often highlighted by the media, the occurrence is extremely rare.

Now that you know why you should fear flying in the rains, here are a few simple tips you should follow while catching your flight in the monsoon season.

Travel Tips For The Monsoon Season

1. Leave Early For The Airport.

Last Month, during heavy rains, a bridge collapsed in Mumbai causing a massive traffic jam , which blocked the road for airport commuters.

Even though such incidences are rare, you should leave at least three hours before the time you have to reach the airport, during the monsoon season.

You will keep able to keep a buffer in case you meet with a huge traffic jam on your way.

If you don’t find traffic during your commute, here are “5 Ways To Kill Time At The Airport” if you arrive early.

2. Choose The Right Airplane Seat

Flying through monsoon clouds will mean bumps, thuds, sudden drops and lifts, however, this is very normal.

Pick a seat right above the airplane wing, or in the emergency exit row. It’s the closest to the aircraft’s center of gravity, and you will have a relatively comfortable ride.

Make sure you don’t get a seat at the back of the airplane, otherwise you’re bound to have a bumpy ride.

3.Carry Medicines and Repellents

As a precautionary measure, make sure that you always carry the first-aid kit and insect repellents.

Monsoon is the season that attracts insects and mosquitoes. Apart from them, diseases are also rampant and travel through the air and water.

So it’s best to carry repellents to keep the disease carriers away and medicines in case you fall sick.

4.Pack Some Form Of Entertainment

Flight delays will happen during monsoon season, which can force you to be stuck at the airport for a really long time.

Pack some board games, books or carry games with you on your tablet or laptop so that you can wait out the bad weather with some form of entertainment.

5. Obey Your Flight Attendant’s Instructions

This is the most important tip!

The most common reason for people getting hurt during turbulent flights is not being buckled in by the seat belt.

Please make sure that you follow all the instructions given by your airline’s flight attendant and follow each step accordingly, especially during a turbulent flight.

If you want to plan a stress free flight during the monsoon season, look no further. Simply download the AirWhizz app to get real-time weather and flight updates, along with airline and airport information to plan your trip on the move.

10 Tips To Plan The Perfect Group Trip!

As students or professionals, we all have at some point made plans to go to Goa with our friends, only to see those trips get cancelled at the last moment.

We think of group trips as a lifetime opportunity to explore the world with our loved ones, but in actuality, it usually involves fighting over itinerary, hotels and destinations to visit.

Luckily there are ways to avoid these situations and ensure that your trip results in a photo album full of incredible memories.

Whether you’re planning a big family reunion, a bachelor party, or a getaway with friends, here are a few pointers to keep in mind while planning a group trip.

1.Appoint A Group Leader

Appointing a leader for your travel group should be the first task, whether that person is you or anyone else with great leadership skills!

But remember, the leader doesn’t only have to plan the trip. They have to be the first point of contact, make sure that everybody’s travel documents are safe and keep the plan in sync.

For instance, if your group is travelling abroad, the leader has to make sure that everyone’s passport is up to date and valid.

2.Agree On A Budget

Staying in a five-star resort or hotel might sound luxurious, but it might not be feasible or logical for all those traveling with you.

As a group, you should agree on a budget for your trip and stick to it, so that there are no surprises for anyone when it’s time to pay!

Consider having a shared pool of money only for group activities and necessary expenses such as accommodation. It’ll be easier than constantly working out how to split bills on the road.

3.Book Your Tickets Early!

Whether your group is flying or taking a cruise to the destination, booking tickets should be high up on the priority list.

It’s a way to confirm who all are coming for the trip, plus it gives you a start and end date so you can effectively fill out the rest of the itinerary.

Make sure you do your bookings, months in advance. Tickets will be cheaper and there will be seats available for everyone on your group.

4.Consider Renting A House

Renting a house can help you avoid stress and save money!

Having a house means a more sociable environment. It will give you the chance to cook group meals and hang out together without cramming into one small hotel room!

Sites like Airbnb make it very easy to find homes to rent anywhere in the world.

5.Pre Plan Group Activities

Take a look at the top things to do at your destination and consider pre-planning some activities, especially if you’re a large group.

If there are any tours you want to do, you may be able to get a group discount. At many places, group activities have to be booked in advance if you have more than a certain number of people, so keep that in mind.

Don’t be too ambitious and try not to plan every second of your trip.

6.Keep Time For Personal Activities.

While planning your group itinerary, make sure that there is time for resting during the day.

Most people in the group will appreciate the chance to do their own thing, whether it’s lazing around in bed, reading by the pool, or going on a solo trek.

Don’t be afraid to go off on your own during a group trip. If there’s something you really want to do, go ahead. It’s your vacation too, so go home with no regrets!

7.Focus On The Details

From gathering everyone at a common point before you depart to reaching your hotel/guest house from the airport, have everything written down to the smallest detail.

For instance, consider which mode of transport you will use during the trip, how much will it cost, will it fit your budget etc.

There’s a lot of logistical planning involved on group trips, so make sure you get all those details right.

8. Communication Is The Key

There will be instances during your trip where your group may get divided, so make sure you have a way to communicate with each other.

In today’s tech-savvy world establishing a common source of communication is not very difficult!

You can start by creating a “WhatsApp” group and as time passes by, you all can share the hotel or house information, itineraries, grocery lists, phone numbers, etc. on a Google doc.

PRO TRAVEL TIP: Ask your group members to make a personal itinerary for the trip and share it with everyone. This will help keep everyone in the loop.

9.Have An Alternate Plan

If one plan doesn’t pan out, don’t let it waste your day.

Always have a backup destination in mind that is similar or close to the original plan.

And we aren’t just talking about group plans. You will need to be flexible with your personal itinerary as well.

10.Hire A Travel Agent

If everything fails and your group is not able to figure out the logistics of the trip, ask a travel agent for their help.

They are professionals in planning group trips and can make your work much easier.

You’ll have to pay for the agent’s services, but they can often save you a lot of money by getting you good deals.

The Ultimate Guide For First Time Flyers!

Airports in India handled almost 117 million passengers in 2017, with almost 100 flights taking off every hour.

With airline ticket prices going down each day, the popularity of travelling by an airplane is at an all-time high and many people are willing to try it.

But navigating through an airport, getting through security and travelling at 30000 feet in the air can be an overwhelming experience, especially if you’re flying for the first time.

So, if you’re a first time flyer and aren’t really sure about what to do, here’s a step by step guide for you to follow the next time you fly.

Booking Your Ticket

The first step in an air travellers journey is booking a flight ticket!

With the help of online travel portals such as MakeMyTrip, GoIbibo & Expedia, you can compare ticket prices for different airlines travelling to your destination.

It’s a relatively easy process which you can handle by yourself.

Once you buy your ticket, you will get a confirmation email and an e-ticket. Make sure you carry a print out of these when you leave for the airport.

In case you don’t have access to an online facility, you can always get in touch with a travel agent in your area.

*PRO TRAVEL TIP – Airlines also give you an option to choose your seat. This process is known as ‘Online Check-In’. Airlines usually open online check-in 48 to 72 hours before the departure time. Choose your seat the night before the departure date and fly comfortably.

Packing

Airlines have kept a limit on the weight and number of bags you can carry with you!

So before you start to pack for your trip, visit your airline’s website to review luggage size and weight restrictions, as well as extra baggage fees.

If your trip is short or are travelling alone, carry a small suitcase or bag pack with you. You won’t have to go through the hassle of getting your bag checked-in with the airline.

However, if you are going on a long trip or are travelling with your family, try to pack according to the limits set by the airline.

If you feel that your luggage exceeds that limit, carry some extra cash with you.

Travel Documents

Apart from your e-ticket printouts, you will need to carry an identification proof with you.

If you’re travelling on a domestic route your driver’s license or your Aadhaar card is sufficient, but if you’re travelling abroad you’ll need a passport.

Make sure your passport is updated and is valid at least 6 months from your date of travel.

Arriving At The Airport

No matter what time of the day you’re travelling, arrive at least 2 hours before your flights departure time.

This gives you plenty of time to deal with security, find your gate, and get everything ready for your flight.

You don’t want to add the stress of being late if you’re travelling by air for the first time.

We would recommend you to take an Ola/ Uber to travel since you can calculate the time it would take to reach your terminal and they will drop you off right in front of the airport entrance.

Dropping off Luggage/Collecting Boarding Pass

If you haven’t booked a seat online or have to get your luggage checked-in, you will have to go to the airline counter once you enter the airport.

There will be enough signs at the airport to guide you to the airline counter, but if you can’t find it by yourself, ask the security personnel at the entrance and he/she will be more than happy to guide you.

Once you reach the airline counter collect your boarding pass/check-in your luggage and head for security check.

Security

Most first time flyers get nervous when they hear the word ‘Airport Security’!

Don’t worry! they’re just making sure that you have a safe flight. Follow whatever instructions the security personnel is giving you and you’ll be fine.

Keep your personal items such as laptops, cell phones or wallets in the containers provided, along with your carry-on bag for inspection.

After this, you’ll go through a metal detector and the security personnel will give you a quick frisk.

Before you know it, your bags will be stamped and your security check would be complete.

It’s that simple!

Finding Your Boarding Gate

The airport offers no shortage of information on anything!

From large screens to friendly staff, there’s always someone who can help you figure things out if you get lost.

After security, you will be able to see airline schedule boards with a list different arrival and departure flights. They display the flight number, arrival or departure time and the boarding gate number for different airlines.

Just cross check that information in case your ticket doesn’t list the gate number or simply to reassure yourself.

If you’re still not sure, they have attendants sitting at desks in every terminal who are always ready to help you.

When it’s time to board, passengers line up and present their boarding pass to a gate agent. Once the agent is done checking your bag for the stamp and the boarding pass, you can either directly walk through a ‘Jetway’ to board your flight or a bus will take to you and your fellow passengers to your airplane.

The Airplane Journey

Now for the fun part, the flying itself!

Board the airplane, find your seat and put your carry-on bags in the overhead bin. Once everyone is seated, the crew will give you safety instructions and soon after that, the airplane will take off.

While flying if you feel turbulence, don’t worry. Its caused by fluctuating air pressures and all airplanes experience it. The occurrence of an accident is very rare and in case of an emergency, the crew is well trained and equipped to handle the situation.

Tips To Avoid Losing Your Bag When You Fly!

You’re waiting at the airport baggage carousel for what seems like forever, when suddenly the conveyor belt stops and your bag is nowhere to be found!

It’s an awful experience when an airline loses your bag and thousands of flyers around the world experience this every day.

Travel mishaps can happen at any time and to anyone, but if you’re well prepared you can reduce those chances.

But before we get into how you can prevent losing your bag at the airport, let us tell you what you should do if your airline delays or loses your luggage.

Delayed/Misplaced Luggage

In spite of all the technological advances, airlines are still handled by humans and errors are bound to happen.

But, airlines today have ways to track your bag and majority of misplaced luggage is returned eventually.

Delay of your luggage can happen in 2 cases –

  • If the airline has sent your bag on another flight, in which case you’ll get your bags within a few hours.
  • If the airline has sent your bag to the wrong airport, for which you’ll have to wait for a few days

Make sure you fill the delayed baggage form immediately at the airport and give the attendant your hotel or home address as well as a phone number where you can be reached.

The airline will bring you your luggage when its found and there won’t be a need for you to go personally to the airport.

If a bag is not sent to you within 21 days, it is considered lost.

Lost Luggage

If the airline looses your bag, it means that it’s time to file a claim.

The airline will do everything it can to find your luggage, but if they officially claim that your luggage is gone, they have to reimburse you for it.

Filling a claim involves filling out a lost baggage form and explaining in detail what was in the bag. Contact the airline representative and they will take care of the rest.

Now that you have a fair idea about what to do If your bag gets lost, here are a few tips that can help you avoid such a situation –

1.Attach A Name Tag

With air travel on the rise, companies such as VIP and American Tourister are mass producing their bags, which makes it difficult for us to have a unique suitcase.

But you can get around this by attaching brightly coloured baggage tags with your name and phone number on it.

You can put a copy of your itinerary inside your bag as well,  so that its easier for the airline to locate you if your not at your home base.

There have been instances where other people have taken the bag thinking it’s theirs and worst is when they just leave it in the middle of the airport when they realise it.

At least someone will be able to contact you if your phone number is on the bag.

2.Arrive Early

In case you didn’t know, the most common reason for delayed or lost baggage is late check-ins at the airport.

In general, make sure you reach the airport as early as possible so that you never have to get into such a situation.

3.Keep A Buffer Between Connecting Flights

This is one more reason why bags get sent on a different flight or the wrong airport!

In a hurry to transfer your bags onto a connecting flight, airlines can do this and locating your bag can become a herculean task.

Keep some buffer time between your connecting flights while booking your tickets and avoid the unnecessary stress.

4.Pack Smartly

Pack all valuables in your carry-on luggage.

Travel essentials such as Cameras, computers, medication kits, wallets, jewellery and passports shouldn’t be carried in you checked-in luggage.

Also make sure you pack a set of clothes in your carry-on bag so that you’ll have something to wear if your checked bag is delayed or lost.

PRO TRAVEL TIP- If you’re traveling with a partner , consider dividing your clothes between each other’s checked bags. This way if one of the bags is lost, you’ll each still have some of your belongings.

5.Make A Packing List

We know it sounds tedious, but it will go a long way in case your bag gets lost.

While filling the lost baggage form, the airline asks you for a list of items you have in the bag. Its better to come prepared, than think about what all you’ve lost on the spot.

6.Buy Travel Insurance

We can’t stress enough on the fact that travel insurance is really important.

Other than covering damaged and lost bags, travel insurance covers emergency medical expenses, emergency cash expenses at the hospital and personal accidents which might occur when you are onboard.

It’s a wise decision to buy travel insurance since it costs just a fraction of your total trip and you are at ease while travelling when you are insured

7.Buy a Luggage Tracker

Consider buying a luggage tracker, which costs not more than Rs 500 and gives you real-time location of your bag on the phone.

Even if you cant find your bag at the airport, you can track it especially if someone takes your bag by mistake, thinking it’s theirs.

One more way in which you can avoid losing your bag at the airport is by downloading the AirWhizz App. We have partnered up with prestigious travel insurance companies such as HDFC Ergo, so you can book your travel insurance via the app itself. You’ll also get information about airline policies and airport services as an app user on the move.
